Report: Bobby Kotick is Activision Blizzard CEO for Now

When Microsoft announced its purchase of gaming behemoth Activision Blizzard, it created quite a sensation. What this means for CEO Bobby Kotick is that he may have a golden parachute waiting for him.

Kotick will stay CEO through the end of Microsoft’s fiscal year 2023, which is June 30, 2023, according to the two businesses. Microsoft plans to complete the transaction before then, so Kotick will continue to work for the company.

According to a Wall Street Journal article, Kotick’s tenure as CEO will soon come to an end.

According to reports, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard have agreed that Kotick will depart after the merger complete. He’ll depart wealthier, though: his employment contract contains a $293 million severance payment if he loses his position due to a corporate acquisition.

Also, he may not be completely out of Microsoft’s reach. After the acquisition complete, Kotick indicated in a statement to the New York Times that he “will be accessible as required.”

This is provided the transaction is completed. Regulators in the United States and Europe will assess the deal, which may be scrutinized more closely in Europe.

According to Microsoft, the acquisition is valued $68.7 billion. It will enable Microsoft to include Activision Blizzard games in its Xbox Game Pass subscription program.

It will also enable Microsoft to establish a mobile presence right away. Minecraft Earth and Forza Street failed to make an impact, and the business has struggled to produce a long-lasting success.

Activision Blizzard, which owns Candy Crush developer King Digital Entertainment, has had the opposite experience. Candy Crush Saga has made roughly $7.1 billion in revenue since January 2014.
