The latest entry in the Dynasty Warriors series sees the warriors of the Sengoku period make their mark on the battlefields of the Warring States era. The latest game in the series lets players battle with a wide range of characters, including Nobunaga Oda, Hidetada Oda, and Takeda Shingen, among many others. The game also adds the concept of military commanders, who can give their troops various orders in combat, and a new system in which each character can be upgraded and customized with new weapons and armor.

What is one word that sums up Samurai Warriors 5? Umm… what?

As an avid fan of the series, I eagerly anticipated the release of Warriors Orochi 4, and was even more pumped to learn that it would be released on the PlayStation 4. However, I found the game to be a big disappointment. With a completely different setting, characters and gameplay from the previous three games, Warriors Orochi 4 doesn’t feel part of the series and doesn’t have the same level of enjoyment I’ve come to expect from a Warriors game.

Omega Force and Koei Tecmo’s Samurai Warriors 5 is now available after being announced in February. Is it worth checking out this reimagining, or should you stick to the earlier entries? Check out our review to learn more.

Review of Samurai Warriors 5

Nobunaga Oda’s tale is told in Samurai Warriors 5 during Japan’s Sengoku era. Warlords have risen up to take the country as their own, causing chaos and conflict. Because to his bravery and cunning, Nobunaga soon claimed a large portion of the Oda clan’s land. He earns the moniker “The Demon King” swiftly and pledges to put a stop to the turmoil by defeating every other clan. While the primary emphasis is on Nobunaga, there is also a Mitsuhide Akechi campaign.

Akechi starts as a competitor to Nobunaga, who later joins forces with the Oda clan to help clear the country of turmoil. Their campaigns lead them to different locations, yet there are certain points when they cross paths. If you complete all of the side objectives, beating both will take you over the 20-hour threshold. While those two are the campaign’s primary protagonists, you may play a variety of other characters on various levels. At the start of a level, you typically get a choice of four or five characters.

Samurai Warriors 5 Honest Review

You hack and slash in Samurai Warriors 5, as you would expect from the franchise. Basic combinations are turned into powerful finishes with the addition of a special strike. There isn’t much new here, but the fighting in the series has never been an issue. With the triangle strike now becoming a dash attack, it’s easier to get to opponents, which is a nice improvement. Furthermore, the air combat is simple to master, drawing inspiration from the One Piece: Pirate Warriors series. Since I just played Nioh, I noticed several Nioh-inspired modifications in the spear attacks, which isn’t a bad thing.

This time around, you can also use Ultimate Skills and objects in battle. The talents include buffs such as increased attack or defense, weapon skills, dash attacks, and a few more things that simply assist you in continuing to construct your combination. In terms of combinations, I felt that this game was more about getting as many hits in as possible rather than killing as many people as possible. Of course, kills were still important, but your final ranking had a more impact on your combo meter than I expected. It did, however, encourage me to keep the battles going longer and to strive for higher and higher combinations.

Samurai Warriors honest game review

You go to your castle in between levels. But don’t get too enthusiastic; it’s just a screen. You may use this section to teach your officers, purchase new goods and weapons, upgrade and sell weaponry, purchase mounts, and improve stores. Upgrading the stores necessitates the acquisition of resources in Citadel mode (which we shall discuss shortly) and the improvement of your purchases. Because your weapons rank up with upgrades, upgrading them may be a bit difficult. Let’s suppose your character can only utilize Katanas of level C, but you just upgraded to a B Katana. You won’t be able to wield the sword until your Katana skill is upgraded to B. It is, however, useful and simple once you get the hang of it.

The second main mode in Samurai Warriors 5 is Citadel Mode. The mode is more of a base defense mode than a general-rush-in-and-kill-the-enemy game. You must defend your camp against an onslaught of foes as they spawn. During this time, you may deploy your own soldiers and complete tasks to enlist the help of AI generals. You may play as any character you’ve unlocked, and the experience and money you gain here will help you progress through the major campaigns. You may also earn resources to improve your stores and, depending on your performance, new horses. It is not required to complete the campaign, but it is a fun option to play when you need a break from it.

You may also form connections with your teammates in Citadel mode. If you complete enough tasks with your buddies, additional moments between the characters will appear. They didn’t mean anything to me, but if you’re like that kind of stuff, they’re here. Despite having a large number of soldiers on the screen at the same time, I didn’t notice any frame dips when playing on the PlayStation 5. There were no crashes or any problems for me. In general, it seems to be the most technically sound Warriors game in quite some time.

While Samurai Warriors 5 doesn’t break the norm, it does help the Warriors series regain its footing after Dynasty Warriors 9. It’s recommended for fans of hack & slash or previous Musou games.
