Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) is an annual marathon of speed runs of classic video games. It has been running since 2003, and has become the largest speed running event in the world. The event is getting bigger and better every year. The first SGDQ in 2003 was a small gathering of small groups of friends, with the goal of running as many NES games as possible in an evening. That was even before Twitch was a thing. A year later, the event got its name (from a speedrunning friend, not me) and the idea was still small. Summer Games Done Quick is a week long event that takes place every June hosted by the Software Preservation Society. The event is a chance for gamers to get together and speedrun games with a different theme each day. This year’s theme is ‘The Future’, where games are run in a more futuristic setting. Games are done in the time limit allowed by the game itself, in some cases being as short as 5 minutes. For a full list of the games and times, check out the Summer Games Done Quick page.
Summer Games Done Quick is one of the biggest charity events in gaming history. Since the event’s inception in 2016, it has raised more than $1.5 million for Doctors Without Borders and TwitchCon. The Summer Games Done Quick event is a 24-hour speedrun marathon hosted across multiple games, with prizes awarded for the fastest times. The event will take place at the IronKraft Game Development Studio and Entertainment Center in Lake Bluff, Illinois. Over 25,000 gamers are expected to take part in this years event.
This weekend’s Summer Games Done Quick event includes a series of speedruns, gameplay demos and competitions.
The event begins on July 4 and lasts until 11am. July. There’s also a perfect GeoGuessr run by havrd, a Ghosts ‘N Goblins Resurrection run by TheMexicanRunner, a four-way Ristar run between chronoon, ShimeGabriel, Lizstar, and Haram_Scaram, a blindfolded Super Mario 64 run by Bubzia, and a Super Metroid run between Behemoth87, Oatsngoats, and ShinyZeni.
This event is organized in support of Doctors without Borders. Those wishing to make a donation can do so here on the Games Done Quick homepage – 100% of all donations received will go to the charity.
